The first Dance Hackathon hosted by SMM_ARTS took place on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Spaceworks Studio in Long Island City. The event was attended by four participants whom had modern dance backgrounds with the common training’s being: Graham, Limon, Hawkins, and Duncan.
The event started with a brainstorming session and the unanimous decision to create a modern style dance to an opposing piece of music was reached. The composer suggestions included; latin and spanish genre; Ezio Bosso and; Sia. Other trends and ideas provided were: lyrical movement, immigration issues, and nuclear war.
At the conclusion of the brainstorming session, attendees chose the piece of music Cheap Thrills by Sia to create a full dance work too. All attendees improvises individually and create 1 eight count of movement to share with the group and combine with all other phrases. Throughout the event, attendees could choose to have a challenge drawn for them in the case that they required inspiration.
At the conclusion of the event, the attendees have created a 3 minute dance work to the chosen piece of music. There was no informal showing held and instead the attendees performed the work for video footage. The event concluded was a 10 minute yoga nidra session.
The attendees expressed great interest for participating in this event again and supported the idea to hold the Dance Hackathon twice yearly, in the spring and in the fall. It is concluded that there will be a fall Dance Hackathon in 2018.
